Fall lawn care schedule

Fall is the most important season for many cool-season lawns. It is also a good time to reset records, soil-test, and prepare warm-season lawns for dormancy.

Cool-season lawns

Cool-season grasses grow strongly in fall as temperatures moderate. UMN describes fall as a key period when shoots grow and nutrients are stored in roots for winter. That makes fall a better window for many fertilization and renovation tasks than hot summer.

Seeding and repair

Late summer to early fall is often the best window for larger cool-season seeding because temperatures cool and weed competition drops. Keep seed moist through establishment and log the date so pre-emergent restrictions are easier to manage later.

Winter prep

Continue mowing until growth slows. UMN late-fall guidance says not to lower mowing height too much at once and not below 2 inches. Mulch or remove leaves so turf is not smothered.

Tools to use

Use the fertilizer calculator for nitrogen math, the app to log applications, and the Price Board to compare fertilizer or seed-starting products after checking labels.
