Fall lawn care schedule

Cool-season grasses grow strongly in fall as temperatures moderate. UMN describes fall as a key period when shoots grow and nutrients are stored in roots for winter. That makes fall a better window for many fertilization and renovation tasks than hot summer.

Late summer to early fall is often the best window for larger cool-season seeding because temperatures cool and weed competition drops. Keep seed moist through establishment and log the date so pre-emergent restrictions are easier to manage later.

Continue mowing until growth slows. UMN late-fall guidance says not to lower mowing height too much at once and not below 2 inches. Mulch or remove leaves so turf is not smothered.
