Grass seed calculator
Calculate how many pounds of seed you need for a new lawn or overseeding, then check timing, soil prep, and the seed tag before buying.
24lb seed needed
6 lb seed per 1,000 sq ft x 4 thousand sq ft
NC State lists tall fescue establishment at 6 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Check the seed tag, cultivar recommendation, local planting window, and label rate before buying.
01Do not seed by vibes
Seeding rate matters. Too little seed leaves open soil and weed pressure; too much seed can create weak, crowded seedlings. NC State specifically warns that higher tall fescue seeding rates can create thin, weak stands that are more disease and heat-stress prone.
02Timing changes by grass
Cool-season lawns are usually seeded strongest in late summer or early fall. Warm-season grasses such as common bermuda and zoysia establish in warmer windows, and many warm-season lawns are planted with sod, plugs, or sprigs rather than seed.
03Before you buy seed
- Measure the lawn area first.
- Check the seed tag for grass species, cultivar, germination, weed seed, and inert material.
- Prepare firm seedbed contact and keep the surface moist during germination.
- Avoid conflicts with pre-emergent herbicides unless the label allows seeding.
