What a pound of nitrogen really costs
University lawn programs, like the Clemson and Purdue ones cited here, are written in pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. So the fair way to compare bags is the price of the nitrogen inside them. Here is that number for every bag and store we track, updated from verified prices.
Cheapest right now
$3.82per lb of nitrogen
LESCO 46-0-0 (stabilized urea), 50 lb for $87.95 at Siteone. The middle of all 16 listings is $15.61.
The formula
price ÷ (bag weight × N%)
N% is the first of the three numbers on the bag. Clemson's example: a 100 lb bag of 16-4-8 holds 16 lb of nitrogen.[1] Today's cheapest spreader bag, LESCO 24-0-11 PolyPlus: $47.77 ÷ (50 lb × 24%) = $3.98 per pound of nitrogen.

That bag holds 12 lb of nitrogen.
For granular bags sold by weight. Liquids are sold by volume, so this does not work for them unless the label gives pounds of nitrogen.

Liquids
Why liquids are not on the list
Liquid fertilizer is sold by the fluid ounce, and the makers we track publish coverage but not the weight of the liquid or the pounds of nitrogen in a bottle. So we price them per 1,000 sq ft at the maker's own coverage instead, which you cannot compare directly with the nitrogen prices above.
Cheap is not the only test
Quick-release or slow-release
Purdue Extension's comparison: quick-release nitrogen gives a rapid greening response with a higher chance of leaf burn; slow-release greens more slowly and lasts longer. For established lawns Purdue says 25 to 50 percent slow-release nitrogen is appropriate.[2] The LESCO PolyPlus bags carry part of their nitrogen as slow-release; the 46-0-0 urea carries none.
Questions people ask
Straight answers
How do you calculate the cost per pound of nitrogen?
Divide the bag price by the pounds of nitrogen in the bag. Pounds of nitrogen are the bag weight times the first number of the analysis as a percent: a 50 lb bag of 24-0-11 holds 50 x 0.24 = 12 lb, so at $48 the nitrogen costs $4.00 a pound.
What does a pound of nitrogen cost right now?
Across the 16 store listings we can price on 10/18/2026, the middle value is $15.61 per pound of nitrogen, and the cheapest is $3.82 (LESCO 46-0-0 (stabilized urea)). Small specialty bags cost far more per pound.
Why is there no cost per pound of nitrogen for liquid fertilizer?
Liquids are sold by volume, and the makers we track publish how many square feet a bottle covers but not how much the liquid weighs or how many pounds of nitrogen it holds. Without that, a cost per pound of nitrogen would be a guess, so we show cost per 1,000 sq ft instead.
Is cheaper nitrogen always the better buy?
Not always. Quick-release nitrogen like urea is usually cheapest, but Purdue Extension notes it carries a higher chance of leaf burn and recommends 25 to 50 percent slow-release nitrogen for established lawns. And the cheapest bag we track is labeled for spraying, not spreading.
