The cheapest pre-emergent, per 1,000 sq ft

A pre-emergent is a weed preventer: it stops seeds such as crabgrass from sprouting, and does nothing to weeds already up. The cheapest bag is rarely the cheapest treatment, so every product below is ranked by what it costs to cover 1,000 sq ft at its label rate, using today's verified store prices.

What the product you actually spread costs, at the highest single application each label allows. For the two prodiamine products that is the label's whole-year amount, which you can also split into two passes for the same total.

Start with a granular: Pendulum 2G

The spray products cost less per 1,000 sq ft, but they need a sprayer, careful measuring, and mixing. A granular goes straight into the same broadcast spreader you use for fertilizer. Of the granulars we track, Pendulum 2G is cheapest per 1,000 sq ft today.[4]

Left off on purpose

Cheap listings you should not buy

Our feed tracks these under pre-emergents too. Sorting by price alone would put one of them at the top of this page.

  • Atrazine 4Lfrom $17.77

A Restricted Use Pesticide: the label limits it to certified applicators, so a homeowner cannot legally buy or apply it, however cheap it looks.[7]

  • Ronstar G (oxadiazon)from $119.95

The label says "Not for use by homeowners/consumers. Not for Use in Turfgrass on Residential Properties."[8]

  • Gallery 75 DF (isoxaben)from $146.37

Prevents certain broadleaf weeds only. It is not a crabgrass preventer.[9]

  • Specticle G and Specticle FLO (indaziflam)from $133.11

Both labels forbid use on Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and turf-type tall fescue, and require a 10 to 12 month wait before seeding. A specialist tool, not a first pre-emergent.[10]

When to put it down

Timing beats price

A pre-emergent put down after crabgrass sprouts is money wasted: the prodiamine label says all applications must be made before weed seeds germinate.[2] University of Missouri Extension times the application to the soil reaching 55 F at a 2-inch depth, or to forsythia coming into bloom.[11] Then water it in: most of these labels ask for about half an inch of rain or irrigation.

Questions people ask

Straight answers

What is the cheapest pre-emergent per 1,000 sq ft right now?

Pendulum AquaCap at $0.66 per 1,000 sq ft for one full-rate application, buying the 2.5 gal size for $132.12 at Solutions Pest & Lawn. It is a spray, so you also need a sprayer. Prices were checked 10/18/2026.

How much does a 50 lb bag of pre-emergent cover?

It depends on the product's rate, not the bag. LESCO Stonewall's label allows up to 9.3 lb per 1,000 sq ft in a year on most grasses (6.2 lb on Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass), so a 50 lb bag covers about 5,376 sq ft at the full rate, or more if you put down less. Read the rate table on the bag you buy.

Is there a crabgrass preventer without fertilizer?

Yes. Prodiamine 65 WDG, Pendulum 2G, Dimension 2EW, and Pendulum AquaCap contain no fertilizer. LESCO Stonewall 0-0-7 carries potash but no nitrogen. LESCO Dimension 19-0-6 is the one on this list that also feeds the lawn.

What month should I put down pre-emergent?

Go by soil temperature, not the calendar. University of Missouri Extension times crabgrass pre-emergent to the soil reaching 55 F at a 2-inch depth, or to forsythia coming into bloom, so the date moves with your location and the year. The prodiamine label requires it to be down before weed seeds germinate, then watered in.

Can I use a pre-emergent if I am planting grass seed?

Not at the same time with these products. Every label here sets a waiting period before you can seed: 3 months for Pendulum and Dimension 2EW, 12 weeks for LESCO Dimension 19-0-6, and 4 to 12 months for prodiamine depending on the rate.
